Changing Your Mind is Hard. This is Why
But then, so is denial
Back in 1900, a horse breeder made a bet. He was absolutely sure the automobile will never take off. He supported his claim by acquiring 5000 new horses just to make a point. Needless to say, he went bankrupt.
We all would like to think that we are rational individuals capable of processing information, testing hypothesis, and then making sound decisions.
But that’s not how it works…at all
When it comes to making up your mind, common sense, rationality or even objectivity goes out of the window very fast. As it turns out, we are not as sensible as we’d like to think and instead we operate more in an emotional, group thinking, and reptilian mode.
Take global warming, the economy, or pandemics for example. If we were rational there would be an overwhelming majority agreeing on a solution but instead, the division and the infighting could not be more evident.
Why is that? How come millions of intelligent, well-educated individuals can’t seem to agree on just about anything?
Because we are just not rational.
